2018 marks the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Epsom Salts, which has helped to detoxify skin and promote well-being since 1618. Sourced in the county of Surrey, Epsom Salts have provided both medical and therapeutic benefits in the world of medicine and beauty throughout this time.
Fast forward 400 years and we still love to use Epsom Salts and rely on them to help our body inside and out. But how can they benefit you?
Epsom Salts were discovered in water at Epsom Common in 1618. A villager called Henry Wicker was looking after animals during a dry summer and there was a shortage of water for his cattle.
He found a trickle of water in the hollow of a cow’s hoof print and dug a hole. Returning the next day, he found the hole was filled with clear water.
However, his animals would not drink it because of its strong mineral taste. This water proved to have medicinal properties and Epsom rapidly became a prosperous health resort and spa.
Benefits of Epsom Salts
Even though Epsom Salts are named after the saline spring in Epsom, Surrey, it isn’t actually ‘salt’ as we know it. Epsom salt is a pure mineral compound of magnesium sulphate in crystal form, so it looks a lot like salt, but has no sodium chloride.
Made from pure magnesium sulphate, Epsom Salts help to:
- Reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
- Flush away toxins and contaminants from the body
- Support muscle and nerve function
- Activate the body’s healing mechanism
- Reduce itchy and irritated skin
They are also renowned for reducing water retention and stomach bloating, due to their ability to draw out unwanted toxins from the body.
